The Florida Hospital Wound Care Clinic

Florida Hospital provides cost-effective, comprehensive care using state-of-the-art technology and specialized teams in many of its services. The Florida Hospital Wound Care Clinic is an example of this superior service. The Clinic offers services for a variety of acute and chronic problem wounds from foot and leg ulcers associated with vascular insufficiencies and diabetes, to complicated wounds, such as necrotizing fasciitis and soft tissue radionecrosis. Florida Hospital also has the largest civilian multi-place hyperbaric oxygen chamber in Florida.

Who is on the team?

  • Physician who specializes in Infectious Disease, Hyperbaric Medicine and Wound Care
  • R.N. who coordinates physical therapy, nutritional education, social services, and home health

What is the consultation and treatment process?

During the initial consultation, a nurse specialist will complete a medical history report on each patient with a follow-up history and review by a physician.

All appropriate lab work, X-rays and cultures will be reviewed to determine any impediments to the healing process. Doppler studies and transcutaneous oxygen monitoring may be performed to determine vascular insufficiency. If any insufficiency is found, the patient will be referred to the appropriate specialists on the team. Specialists, including cardiologists, endocrinologists, vascular surgeons, vascular interventionists and orthopedic surgeons, among others, are consulted only when necessary for further testing and input into the individualized plan for management of the wound.

The treatment plan includes ongoing assessment, patient education, local wound care techniques including debridement and whirlpool when necessary, and hyperbaric oxygen (in selected cases). The team will meet on a regular basis to review and revise all aspects of the wound management plan.

How is a patient referred?

Patients may be self- or physician-referred. The initial consultation is usually conducted within three business days of the referral.

The wound management plan will be determined by the wound management team using standardized protocols. The attending physician will be updated regularly on the patient’s progress, or if any changes are made to the wound care plan.
